Why it is ours

For Black American with Nigerian, Ghanaian, or West African ancestry — agbalumo is ancestral memory. For all Black American, it represents the fruit pharmacopoeia that the Middle Passage severed. Every time APEX surfaces agbalumo for blood pressure, it is returning that severed knowledge.

What it does

Multiple studies from Nigerian research institutions have demonstrated that agbalumo/udara extracts exhibit alpha-glucosidase inhibition (blood glucose management), ACE inhibition (blood pressure), and antioxidant activity. The vitamin C content supports iron absorption. Traditional use in oral health (the seed gum was used as a natural chewing gum) has antimicrobial validation.

How it is cooked

Eaten fresh by pressing the fruit open and sucking the pulp off the skin and seeds. The pulp can also be made into juice. Available fresh at African specialty markets during season; available as frozen pulp year-round from African food importers.
