APEX Legacy · a way of life

Ashwagandha

The most clinically studied adaptogen — a substance that helps the body adapt to stress without over-stimulating or sedating. KSM-66 extract (the most studied form) consistently reduces cortisol levels, improves testosterone in men, reduces anxiety scores, and improves sleep quality in randomized controlled trials.

Why it is ours

Available at Whole Foods, vitamin stores, and online. KSM-66 is the extract form with the most clinical backing. The root powder at African or Indian grocery stores is the most affordable form.

What it does

Multiple RCTs: ashwagandha KSM-66 reduces serum cortisol by 15-27% over 8-12 weeks. Directly addresses the cortisol-mediated hypertension and magnesium depletion documented in Black Americans by Geronimus weathering research. Men: improves testosterone by 15-17% in 8-week trials — relevant for Brothers Sentinel (testosterone suppression from chronic stress is a documented mechanism). Thyroid: supports T3/T4 conversion in subclinical hypothyroidism. Sleep: 1-2 hours earlier sleep onset in research.

How it is cooked

Ashwagandha root powder: 1/2 tsp in warm milk (oat, coconut, or dairy) before bed. Mix with honey and ghee in the traditional 'moon milk' preparation. Available as capsules (KSM-66 or Sensoril are the clinically studied extracts). The traditional food preparation is the ashwagandha golden milk at bedtime.
