Camu Camu

The highest vitamin C content of any food on the planet — up to 3,000mg per 100g, which is 60 times an orange. One teaspoon of camu camu powder gets you to your daily vitamin C target. For a Black American woman under chronic racial stress — cortisol depleting everything — this is not a supplement. This is a reloading mechanism.

Why it is ours

Camu camu powder is available at Whole Foods, Sprouts, and on Amazon — but under-marketed to Black communities despite being the most powerful natural vitamin C source available. Black American women, who carry the highest allostatic load of any demographic group in the US (Weathering Hypothesis), are the exact population that most needs ascorbate-dense food. This should be in every Black household as a baseline morning supplement.

What it does

A 2018 Journal of Nutrition study (Fukumoto et al.) showed camu camu supplementation reduced multiple inflammatory markers including interleukin-6 and CRP versus synthetic vitamin C controls at equivalent doses — indicating synergistic bioactive activity beyond ascorbic acid alone. Ellagic acid and anthocyanins show independent NF-kB inhibitory anti-inflammatory activity. Blood pressure: a 2012 study found daily camu camu juice consumption for 7 days produced significant reduction in blood pressure versus placebo in hypertensive subjects. Vitamin C drives collagen synthesis and supports cortisol recovery — critical for Weathering Hypothesis-affected populations where chronic stress depletes ascorbate stores. Iron absorption: vitamin C dramatically increases non-heme iron absorption — camu camu taken with plant iron sources can triple iron uptake, addressing anemia common in Black American women.

How it is cooked

Available primarily as freeze-dried powder — extremely tart, similar to sour candy. Mix 1 teaspoon in water, juice, or smoothies. The tartness pairs well with tropical fruits (mango, pineapple, papaya). Can be stirred into yogurt with honey. Do not heat — vitamin C degrades with heat above 140°F.
