APEX Legacy · a way of life

Cantaloupe

Summer melon alongside watermelon — equally present at every cookout but somehow never mentioned in the same breath. Eaten cold, salted, and in abundance. A summer staple that deserves its own entry.

Why it is ours

Cantaloupe is always at the cookout. It is always on the table at summer gatherings. It is the fruit that shows up without announcement, gets eaten without ceremony, and is never given credit for how consistently it is there. This is its acknowledgment.

What it does

One cup of cantaloupe provides 100% of daily vitamin A as beta-carotene — among the highest of any common fruit. Potassium density at 427mg per cup is directly relevant for DASH diet compliance and blood pressure management. The 90% water content contributes meaningful hydration in summer heat. Beta-carotene's cardiovascular protective effects are well-documented.

How it is cooked

Ripe cantaloupe gives slightly to thumb pressure at the blossom end and has a sweet, musky aroma at the stem scar. Cold and salted is the Southern tradition. Cube it, chill it, put it on a paper plate at the cookout.
