Cat's Claw Bark

Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is the vine bark from the Peruvian Amazon whose curved thorns give it its name and whose alkaloid profile represents one of the most complex immune-modulating botanical medicines in the world. Ashaninka healers of Peru have used it for 2,000 years for arthritis, infection, and cancer — and the science has now documented its NF-kB inhibition, DNA repair, and immune cell activation mechanisms with enough precision that it is under active cancer research.

Why it is ours

Cat's claw is available at health food stores and increasingly at Walmart supplement sections. Black communities with Latin American neighbors in Houston, Miami, and Dallas have access to fresh bark at Latin herb markets (yerberias). Growing awareness in Black natural health communities through arthritis and immune support channels.

What it does

Cat's claw contains a complex of oxindole alkaloids — primarily isopteropodin (isomer A) and pteropodine (isomer B) — that demonstrate immune modulation through natural killer (NK) cell stimulation and macrophage phagocytosis enhancement. A critical pharmacological distinction: pentacyclic oxindole alkaloids (POAs) stimulate immune function while tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids (TOAs) may antagonize this effect — quality products should specify POA-standardized bark. Isopteropodin demonstrates direct DNA repair enzyme stimulation in studies by Dr. Klaus Keplinger at the University of Innsbruck — enhancing p53 tumor suppressor activity and nucleotide excision repair capacity. Quinovic acid glycosides inhibit specific RNA virus replication including herpes simplex and HSV-2 — relevant to the higher herpes burden in Black communities related to healthcare access disparities. A 2001 Phytomedicine randomized controlled trial found cat's claw extract significantly reduced knee osteoarthritis pain scores (VAS score reduction 53% vs. 24% placebo, p<0.001) at 100mg/day.

How it is cooked

Standardized extract (POA-rich): 100mg/day for anti-inflammatory use; 250-350mg/day for immune support. Bark tea: 1g dried bark in 2 cups water, simmered 15 minutes. Look for TOA-free or POA-standardized products. Tincture: 2-4 ml twice daily. Best absorbed with a small amount of fat.
