Chlorella

Freshwater microalgae — the most clinically documented food for heavy metal detoxification. Specifically relevant for communities with documented lead exposure from redlined housing.

Why it is ours

Environmental justice: Black children in the US have blood lead levels 2x higher than white children — from housing and environmental exposure, not behavior. Chlorella is not a wellness trend for this community. It is an environmental justice food.

What it does

Chlorella's cell wall contains sporopollenin — a compound that binds to heavy metals (lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic) and carries them out of the body in stool. Multiple human clinical trials confirm chlorella supplementation reduces blood lead and mercury levels. Black Americans in older urban housing have measurably higher blood lead levels — chlorella addresses a documented environmental justice disparity. Chlorella Growth Factor contains nucleotides and peptides that stimulate DNA repair — relevant to higher cancer risk from chronic oxidative stress.

How it is cooked

Available as tablets, capsules, or powder. Powder mixes into smoothies (turns them green). Start with 500mg and increase gradually — detox reactions (headache, fatigue) can occur if started at high doses. Best taken with meals.
