Dakuwa

Roasted groundnuts ground with toasted millet or guinea corn, ginger, cloves, and chili, pressed into firm balls or bars — a dense, spiced energy snack. The Hausa pocket food, sweet-spicy and protein-rich, sold at markets and carried on journeys.

Why it is ours

Dakuwa is the Sahelian energy bar — the millet-and-groundnut snack the Hausa carried on long journeys, kin to the boiled-peanut and parched-corn snacks of Black Southern foodways. The protein-grain pocket snack is a shared ancestral solution to needing food on the move.

What it does

Dakuwa pairs groundnut protein and heart-healthy monounsaturated fat with whole-millet fiber and minerals — a genuinely balanced snack with protein, fat, and complex carbohydrate that releases energy slowly and steadies blood sugar far better than processed snacks. The groundnut adds niacin and resveratrol; the millet adds iron and magnesium; the ginger and clove add anti-inflammatory warmth. A real alternative to chips and candy.

How it is cooked

Roast groundnuts and millet or guinea corn separately, then grind together with ginger, cloves, chili, and a little salt or sweetener until the natural oils bind the mixture. Press into balls or bars. Store dry. Eat as a snack or travel food. Keep added sugar minimal.
