Guguru ati Epa

The beloved Yoruba street pairing — freshly popped corn (guguru) eaten together with roasted groundnuts (epa), the sweet-crunchy corn and the rich nutty peanut balancing each other. Childhood snack and cinema food of a generation.

Why it is ours

Guguru ati epa is the snack of Yoruba childhood — the after-school treat, the market and cinema staple, the thing grandparents bought by the wrap of paper. It is pure nostalgia and pure, accidental nutrition.

What it does

This is one of the healthiest traditional snacks in the canon when made simply. Air-popped corn is a whole grain rich in fiber and polyphenols; roasted peanuts add monounsaturated fat, protein, magnesium, and niacin. Together they make a low-glycemic, satisfying snack that supports heart health and steady blood sugar — a genuine ancestral answer to chips.

How it is cooked

Pop dry corn (traditionally in a pot with minimal oil or none) and roast raw groundnuts in a dry pan until the skins darken and loosen. Combine and eat by the handful — corn and peanut in the same bite is the point.
