Hemp Milk

Plant milk from hemp seeds — lactose-free, nut-free, and one of the few plant milks carrying omega-3 fats and a meaningful bit of complete plant protein.

Why it is ours

Hemp milk gives a Black household a nut-free, omega-3-carrying plant milk — important where a child has nut allergies and where the family is short on the anti-inflammatory fats that fish would otherwise provide. It rounds out the plant-milk rotation with a fat profile the others lack.

What it does

Hemp milk is lactose-free and nut-free — useful for the 75-80% of Black Americans who are lactose intolerant AND for anyone in the household with a tree-nut allergy. Its distinguishing nutrient is fat quality: hemp seeds carry omega-3 (ALA) and omega-6 in a balanced ratio, anti-inflammatory fats relevant to a population under chronic inflammatory load from weathering and to cardiovascular and brain health. It also brings a modest amount of complete plant protein (more than nut milks, less than soy) plus magnesium and iron. Like all plant milks, buy a FORTIFIED version for calcium, vitamin D, and B12 to fill the cow-milk gap, and pair calcium with K2 for bone. Hemp milk is a good rotation choice — it covers the omega-3 angle most other plant milks miss.

How it is cooked

Use unsweetened, fortified hemp milk in smoothies, on cereal, and in coffee. It is thinner and has a distinct earthy taste some need to adjust to. Shake well — it separates. Blends well into smoothies where its flavor disappears behind fruit and greens.
