Kool-Aid

Part of Black childhood everywhere in America. More culturally embedded than most databases acknowledge — and directly linked to the T2D epidemic in Black communities.

Why it is ours

Kool-Aid is woven into Black American childhood in a way no health database has adequately acknowledged. Block parties, summer days, church events, after-school. Dismissing it without honoring its cultural weight is why this conversation has never worked.

What it does

A standard homemade pitcher of Kool-Aid uses 1 cup of sugar per 2-quart batch. A standard 8oz glass carries roughly 24g of added sugar. Children in Black households who drink 2-3 glasses daily are consuming their entire recommended sugar allotment from this one source.

How it is cooked

If still consumed, reduce sugar by 50% — the flavor packet is strong enough to carry the taste at half sugar. The hibiscus swap provides the same deep red color with active blood pressure benefits.
