Lemon Water

Water with fresh lemon. The morning glass that shows up in Black households as a daily ritual, a digestion aid, a cleanse, a reset. Not a wellness trend — a grandmother tradition.

Why it is ours

Lemon water is not new to Black households. Long before Instagram wellness culture discovered it, Black women were squeezing lemon into their first glass of water as a kitchen ritual learned from mothers and grandmothers. APEX acknowledges what was already known.

What it does

Citric acid in lemon binds dietary calcium in urine and reduces kidney stone formation — documented in urologic literature. Morning hydration with electrolytes (potassium in lemon) helps regulate blood pressure and cortisol rhythm. Vitamin C from fresh lemon enhances non-heme iron absorption when consumed with plant-based meals — directly relevant for Black women with iron-deficiency anemia.

How it is cooked

Half a fresh lemon squeezed into 8-12oz of room temperature or warm water. Morning on an empty stomach is the tradition and also well-timed for citric acid's digestive priming effect. Add a pinch of cayenne to activate capsaicin's metabolic properties.
