Nettle Leaf

Stinging herb that becomes nutritionally impressive when cooked (heat neutralizes the sting). One cup cooked provides iron comparable to meat (3mg), calcium (43mg), and is one of the highest plant sources of histamine-blocking compounds — making it relevant for seasonal allergy relief. Also contains serotonin precursors, formic acid (anti-inflammatory), and lectin compounds that inhibit prostate cell growth.

Why it is ours

Dried nettle leaf widely available online and at health stores (Mountain Rose Herbs, Frontier Co-op). Nettle tea bags at health stores and some mainstream stores. Fresh nettle sometimes at farmers markets in spring. Affordable in dried bulk form.

What it does

The BPH evidence is significant and understudied in the Black community. Black men have higher rates of BPH (enlarged prostate) and higher rates of prostate cancer than white men, yet lower rates of treatment. Nettle root (not leaf) contains Urtica dioica lectin (UDA) that inhibits binding of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) to prostate receptors — reducing prostate cell stimulation. A 2005 RCT found nettle root extract significantly improved BPH urinary symptoms versus placebo. For iron deficiency: the iron bioavailability from cooked nettles is higher than most plant sources due to the co-occurring vitamin C and absence of high tannins (unlike tea). For allergies: nettle contains compounds that inhibit prostaglandin formation and histamine release — a 2009 RCT found freeze-dried nettle leaf capsules modestly effective for allergic rhinitis (hay fever). The kidney stone preventive mechanism: nettle increases urine output and dilution — reducing crystal concentration.

How it is cooked

ALWAYS cook before eating fresh (blanching 1-2 min neutralizes the sting). Use thick gloves when handling fresh. Once cooked, treat like spinach — sauté with garlic and olive oil, add to soups, blend into green smoothies (freezing also neutralizes the sting). Dried nettle tea: steep 1-2 tsp dried leaf in hot water 10 min. Nettle powder: add to smoothies, soups. Avoid touching fresh leaves with bare hands.
