Sea Moss Gel Drink

Sea moss gel drink is the thing your Jamaican neighbor introduced you to, and if you made it right — soaked the raw moss overnight, blended it with almond milk and cinnamon — you felt it. Ninety-two minerals. The thyroid support alone is worth the effort.

Why it is ours

Sea moss gel and drink is perhaps the highest-visibility wellness trend in current Black American culture — driven by Dr. Sebi's legacy, Caribbean community transmission, and social media. Access is strong (online, Caribbean stores, specialty Black wellness vendors). The intelligence upgrade needed is dosing clarity and thyroid monitoring — not discouraging use but informing it properly.

What it does

Sea moss carrageenan (specifically kappa and lambda carrageenan from whole food form) forms a mucilaginous gel that coats and soothes mucous membranes — from respiratory tract to GI lining. This mechanism supports the traditional use for respiratory illness (bronchitis, congestion) and GI inflammation. Iodine content supports thyroid hormone synthesis (T3, T4) — relevant for the estimated 3.7% of Black American women with hypothyroidism (slightly higher than general population). However: iodine content is highly variable between sea moss species and harvest locations — ranging from safe to potentially excessive. A 2021 case report in BMJ documented hyperthyroidism from excessive sea moss consumption. Carrageenan in gel/whole food form differs from processed carrageenan food additive — whole food form shows different GI effects. Sulfated polysaccharides demonstrate antiviral activity against influenza and HSV in in vitro studies.

How it is cooked

Purchase raw dried sea moss (not pre-made gel of unknown quality). Rinse thoroughly to remove sea salt and debris. Soak in cold water 24 hours — will expand 2-3x in size and turn lighter in color. Blend soaked moss with fresh water until completely smooth — creates gel. Store gel in sealed glass jar in fridge for up to 3 weeks. To make drink: blend 1-2 tablespoons gel with plant-based milk, cinnamon, raw honey, and vanilla. Use 2-4 tablespoons gel daily maximum.
