Why it is ours

French's yellow mustard is on the condiment tray at every Black cookout, church repast, and family reunion from South Carolina to South Central. The bologna-and-yellow-mustard sandwich is a Black American childhood meal that crosses every regional and class line.

What it does

Yellow mustard's color comes from turmeric — curcumin content is trace-level per serving but consistent across daily use. Vinegar base supports glycemic response moderation. At zero fat and roughly 5 calories per teaspoon it is the most cost-effective flavor layer in the Black American kitchen. No harm, measurable cultural utility.

How it is cooked

Applied directly to sandwiches, hot dogs, and burgers. Used as a base in BBQ sauce, potato salad dressing, and deviled eggs. Rub yellow mustard on chicken or pork ribs before dry rub application — it acts as a binder and adds flavor depth that largely cooks off.
