Why it is ours

Ukwa is one of the most culturally significant foods in Igbo culture. 'Ukwa mara mma' (ukwa is good/beautiful) is an Igbo proverb. Canned ukwa is a diaspora comfort food connecting Igbo communities across generations.

What it does

Ukwa has one of the highest potassium contents of any plant food — 2,058mg per 100g, exceeding banana and sweet potato. This makes it a powerful antihypertensive food for the sodium-sensitive hypertension common in Black Americans. Complete protein profile provides all essential amino acids. The fiber content supports gut health and blood sugar regulation.

How it is cooked

Soak overnight and boil 1-2 hours until tender. Season with palm oil, crayfish, uziza leaf, and salt. Available in canned form from African grocery stores (pre-cooked). Canned ukwa is a practical diaspora shortcut.
