Why it is ours

A potent, accessible immune mushroom for those building a functional-mushroom practice — sold in Black-owned wellness shops and online, often alongside reishi and turkey tail for immune support.

What it does

Agaricus blazei has one of the highest beta-(1,3)/(1,6)-glucan concentrations among edible mushrooms, the fraction most associated with activating natural killer cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Clinical and animal studies suggest immune-stimulating effects, with some trials in cancer patients (as an adjuvant alongside chemotherapy) showing improved NK-cell activity and quality of life, and other research into blood-sugar and liver-protective effects. Honest note: while among the better-studied medicinal mushrooms, evidence is still mixed and not conclusive; it is an adjunct, never a cancer or diabetes treatment. Quality and contamination vary widely between products.

How it is cooked

Rarely eaten fresh; usually consumed as a hot-water decoction of the dried mushroom or as a standardized extract. Simmer dried mushroom 20-60 minutes to pull out water-soluble beta-glucans. Follow product dosing for extracts. Has a pleasant almond aroma when prepared.
