Baobab Fruit

Baobab fruit pulp is the highest natural source of vitamin C per gram of any fruit in the world — 6x the vitamin C of oranges. It contains prebiotics that specifically feed Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, calcium exceeding dairy, and antioxidant ORAC values 10x higher than most superfruits. The ancestral superfruit the wellness industry discovered 4,000 years late.

Why it is ours

Available online from African specialty brands (ADUNA, Baobab Foods). Growing presence in health food stores. The powder is shelf-stable and economical per serving.

What it does

The vitamin C concentration is clinically significant for iron absorption — baobab with iron-containing foods (collard greens, egusi, lentils) dramatically increases iron bioavailability. This is exactly how the ancestral diet worked: complementary foods paired intuitively that Western nutrition science later validated. The prebiotic fiber specifically feeds the beneficial bacteria that are depleted by chronic stress and antibiotic overuse — both disproportionately affecting Black Americans. Calcium that bioavailability-matches or exceeds dairy, without the inflammatory compounds in cow's milk.

How it is cooked

Baobab powder is the most available form in the US. Add 1-2 tablespoons to smoothies, yogurt, oatmeal, or water. The flavor is tart, slightly citrusy — pairs well with mango, hibiscus, and honey. Available online and at health food stores. Buy from African-sourced brands when possible to support the ancestral supply chain.
