Why it is ours

Ground cardamom at most grocery stores. Whole pods at Indian, Middle Eastern, and Ethiopian markets. Affordable.

What it does

A 2020 systematic review found cardamom extract significantly reduced systolic blood pressure in hypertensive patients — the mechanism involves ACE inhibition and diuretic activity. For oral health: 1,8-cineole and alpha-terpineol are bactericidal against Streptococcus mutans (primary cavity-causing bacteria) and periodontal pathogens. Chewing cardamom pods or drinking cardamom tea after meals was the traditional oral hygiene protocol before modern dental products — a documented practice in East Africa and the Middle East. The digestive benefit: cardamom relieves nausea, reduces gas, and stimulates bile flow — making it a practical post-meal digestive aid. The antioxidant flavonoid content is among the highest of any spice (ORAC score comparable to cinnamon).

How it is cooked

Add whole pods to rice cooking water for fragrant ancestral rice. Ground cardamom in coffee, chai, oatmeal, spice blends. Chew on whole pods for oral freshness (East African tradition).
