Fenugreek

Bitter seeds and mildly bitter leaves. Seeds are used as a spice and supplement. Leaves (methi) are used as a vegetable and herb. Contains diosgenin (a steroidal saponin), trigonelline (alkaloid), galactomannan fiber (the blood sugar mechanism), and 4-hydroxyisoleucine (an unusual amino acid that stimulates insulin secretion).

Why it is ours

Fenugreek seeds widely available at Indian, Middle Eastern, Ethiopian, and West African grocery stores. Very affordable. Ground fenugreek at many grocery store spice aisles. Capsule supplements at health stores.

What it does

The evidence base spans four clinical conditions: For T2DM: multiple RCTs show fenugreek seed powder (10-25g/day) significantly reduces fasting blood glucose and HbA1c. The mechanism: galactomannan fiber slows carbohydrate digestion and absorption; 4-hydroxyisoleucine directly stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. For PCOS: diosgenin is a precursor to progesterone in the human body — fenugreek supplementation in PCOS patients improved menstrual regularity and reduced cyst parameters in a 2015 RCT. For lactation: fenugreek is the most widely studied galactagogue (milk-production stimulant) — a 2018 Cochrane-reviewed study found fenugreek tea significantly increased milk production in the first 2 weeks postpartum. For testosterone in men: a 2011 RCT in Phytotherapy Research found fenugreek extract 600mg/day significantly increased total and free testosterone, libido, and sexual performance in healthy men. The 4-hydroxyisoleucine is the probable mechanism via insulin sensitization improving testosterone bioavailability.

How it is cooked

Seeds (whole): toast in dry pan to reduce bitterness before adding to dishes. Soak overnight and sprout for a gentler form. Grind for spice blends. Add to curry bases, Ethiopian berbere. Supplement: 1-2 capsules (500-1000mg seed extract) twice daily for blood sugar or PCOS protocols. Fenugreek leaves (methi): sauté like spinach, add to Indian/North African dishes.
