Why it is ours

Licorice flavor is familiar in Black American communities through candy culture and anise-flavored foods. DGL form is widely available at health food stores.

What it does

Glycyrrhizin inhibits 11-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase — the enzyme that inactivates cortisol — effectively prolonging cortisol activity and supporting adrenal function in cortisol-depleted states from chronic racial stress (the weathering hypothesis). DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice) form treats GI ulcers and GERD by stimulating mucus production in the stomach lining. Glabridin has anti-estrogenic and antioxidant effects relevant to fibroid management. CRITICAL: glycyrrhizin raises blood pressure — use DGL form in hypertension.

How it is cooked

For GI: DGL chewable tablets before meals. For adrenal support: licorice root tea (1/2 tsp per cup, steep 10 min) — avoid if hypertensive. Licorice root stick can be chewed or brewed.
