Maca Root Powder

Adaptogenic root with gelatinized or raw powder form. Contains unique glucosinolates (macamides and macaridine) that are specific to maca with documented effects on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis regulation — the exact pathway disrupted by weathering hypothesis chronic cortisol. Multiple RCTs show maca improves energy, libido, and menopausal symptoms.

Why it is ours

The energy + libido + hormonal balance needs of aging Black American women are significant and underserved in conventional healthcare. Maca offers a food-based intervention with clinical evidence in all three domains.

What it does

Maca's macamides specifically modulate the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (not via direct hormone activity, but upstream regulation) — avoiding the estrogen receptor concerns of other adaptogens. Multiple RCTs show improvement in menopausal symptoms, libido in both men and women, and sustained energy without the cortisol spike of caffeine. The high iron (14.7mg/100g) and calcium (450mg/100g) of the root itself provide additional nutritional support for the primarily Black American women who use it.

How it is cooked

Available at most health food stores and online as gelatinized (pre-cooked, easier to digest) or raw powder. Add 1-2 tsp to smoothies, oatmeal, or coffee. Gelatinized form has higher bioavailability. Has malty, slightly nutty flavor. Start with 1 tsp and build to 2 tsp.
