Wakame

Brown seaweed with uniquely high fucoxanthin content — a marine carotenoid with demonstrated visceral fat reduction, metabolic rate improvement, and liver protection. Also rich in fucoidan (anti-tumor, antiviral marine polysaccharide) and iodine. The primary sea vegetable for metabolic health.

Why it is ours

The metabolic support food that addresses visceral adiposity — one of the core drivers of the cardiometabolic disease burden in Black Americans. APEX introduces wakame as the sea vegetable specifically for belly fat and metabolic health.

What it does

Fucoxanthin has documented ability to reduce visceral adipose tissue (belly fat) in human clinical trials — through thermogenin (UCP1) activation in brown adipose tissue. Visceral adiposity is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease, T2D, and metabolic syndrome — all disproportionately prevalent in Black Americans. Fucoidan has multiple studies showing anti-tumor, anti-HIV, and anti-inflammatory activity.

How it is cooked

Available dried at Asian grocery stores and Whole Foods. Soak dried wakame 5 minutes in cold water; it expands significantly. Use in miso soup, salads, or as side dish. Very mild flavor. Also available in fresh/pickled form at Asian grocery stores.
