Black Plum (African Star Apple / White Star Apple)

Sweet-tart black plum fruit with significant antioxidant activity, iron content, and traditional application in diabetes and liver disease management. The leaves and fruit have both been subject to pharmacological investigation for their glucose-lowering and hepatoprotective properties.

Why it is ours

Yoruba traditional medicine relied on Vitex doniana for diabetes and liver conditions — the conditions that now disproportionately kill Black Americans. Traditional healers had the pharmacology right centuries before Western medicine confirmed it.

What it does

Vitex doniana leaf and fruit extracts have demonstrated significant hypoglycemic activity in animal models, with multiple mechanistic studies suggesting inhibition of alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase (same mechanism as metformin-class drugs). The iron content supports anemia management alongside the vitamin C that enhances iron absorption.

How it is cooked

Eat fresh ripe fruit (black-colored when ripe, green-brown when unripe). Can be made into jam or juice. Traditional medicinal decoction: boil dried fruit with ginger.
