Why it is ours

The dry-season food of the Sahel — available to enslaved peoples' West African ancestors as daily medicine. The sleep-disruption that is endemic to Black Americans (weathering + stress + sleep apnea) meets its ancestral intervention: jujube tea before bed.

What it does

Multiple RCTs demonstrate jujube extract (specifically jujuboside A/B and saponins) reduces anxiety via GABAergic modulation and improves sleep quality without dependency risk. Directly relevant to weathering hypothesis — chronic racial stress depletes GABA, increases cortisol, disrupts sleep. The immune polysaccharides are among the most studied natural immunomodulators.

How it is cooked

Eat dried jujubes as snack (available at Asian/African grocery stores). Simmer 5-10 dried jujubes in water for 20 minutes as sleep tea. Add to porridge or congee. Jujube honey is powerfully medicinal.
