APEX Legacy · a way of life

Kei Apple

Small intensely tart yellow-orange fruit with very high vitamin C content, citric acid, and pectin. Used primarily as jam, jelly, and medicinal preparation. The intense sourness is from organic acids including citric and malic acid.

Why it is ours

Southern African ancestral fruit — enslaved peoples from Mozambique, Zanzibar, and South African coastal regions brought knowledge of this fruit to the Americas. Available from South African specialty food importers.

What it does

High pectin content supports cholesterol reduction and gut health. Vitamin C density rivals acerola. Traditional use by Xhosa healers for coughs and respiratory infections has potential validation in the vitamin C + citric acid combination supporting mucus clearance.

How it is cooked

Too tart to eat raw for most people. Excellent in jam (sugar-reduced versions using monk fruit sweetener), chutneys, and preserves. Juice concentrated and diluted is a powerful vitamin C tonic.
