Pumpkin Seeds (Pepitas)

One ounce of pumpkin seeds provides 37% of daily magnesium — the mineral chronically depleted by racial stress and the most deficient mineral in Black Americans. Also the highest plant source of zinc. The single most important snack food in the APEX database.

Why it is ours

Available at every grocery store. Extremely affordable. The most accessible high-magnesium Tier 1 food in the database.

What it does

Magnesium relaxes arterial walls and is the primary nutrient depleted by cortisol — addressing both sodium-driven and stress-driven hypertension simultaneously. Zinc supports testosterone and immune function (directly relevant to Brothers Sentinel). Tryptophan is a serotonin precursor — pumpkin seeds before bed support sleep onset. The most cost-effective magnesium-zinc combination in whole food form.

How it is cooked

Eat raw or lightly toasted. Add to salads, oatmeal, trail mix, or eat as a standalone snack. 1oz (about a small handful) is one serving. Add to smoothies for a protein and mineral boost.
