Saltine Crackers

Premium or generic saltines — the delivery vehicle for every canned protein and a last-resort meal crumbled into milk when nothing else was there.

Why it is ours

Saltines are in every Black American pantry without exception. They are the universal fallback — the thing that's always there when nothing else is. They pair with every canned protein in this database.

What it does

Low nutritional value on their own. High in refined carbohydrates and sodium. Their value is as a vehicle and an accessible calorie source in hard times. Honest: crackers and milk kept people fed when the cupboard was otherwise bare.

How it is cooked

Paired with sardines in oil, canned salmon, Vienna sausages, potted meat, or bean soup. The classic: crumble a sleeve into a glass of cold milk. Also used to scoop up bean soup instead of bread.
